Deer Hunting in Kentucky

Over the past weekend, I hunted in Kentucky with Drop Tine Outfitters It was opening the opening weekend for Kentucky's archery whitetail season. Kentucky is one of the few states that opens early enough for you to take a buck in velvet.

Most deer shed their velvet from their antlers by the second week.of September. While the 100 degree temperatures made the hunting very tough, I did get to see something pretty cool at the farmhouse we were staying in. A beautiful big spider had made its web in the corner of the front porch. It almost did not look real its colors were so awesome! Anybody know what kind of spider this is?

  2. It's called a Golden Orb Weaver. They can get to be pretty big but will only bite you if pinched. You won't like it if you ever do but you'll live.

  3. Growing up we just called them a yellow garden spider. Their scientific name is argiope aurantia and is an orb web spider.
They are impressive and cool to see.

  4. They go by a couple names. We used to call them 'garden spiders', and some still do. More commonly they are referred to as 'golden orb weavers' or 'black and yellow orb-web' spiders. They look menacing but are actually considered beneficial.
